We are now offering Utricularia! Utricularia longifolia is considered a terrestrial to epiphytic species growing between rocks and sand. All of their carnivory is below ground. Utricularia develop little bladders on their root structures that suck in microscopic insects. Above ground they produce stolons that will cover the surface of the substrate and they produce long scapes of dark purple flowers.
Lighting: Utricularia require high light growing conditions. They want to be set in a western or southern window. We grow ours under LED grow lights that we leave on for at least 13 hours a day.
Watering: Utricularia need to be sitting in low mineral water. They like their pots to be flooded with water once or twice a week.
Potting mix: The reason why Utricularia modified their root structure to consume insects is due to their growing conditions. They grow in nutrient poor soil. We use a mix of long fibered sphagnum and perlite substrate.
Temperatures: Utricularia thrive as an indoor plant. In some warmer southern states may be able to grow them outdoors year round as long as the temperatures ranges between 80 degrees F during the day and not dipping below 40 degrees F at night.
